Schools at the center
Davis introduced his running mate, former Board of Regents chair Jill Docking, on a school bus tour in October 2013. By late summer 2014, Kansas Democrats up and down the ballot were building their campaigns around school funding, and Davis said restoring classroom money would be his top priority as governor. His campaign's September ad "Tradition" made the same argument on television.
The campaign's brochure said Kansas teachers and business leaders were backing Davis. It did not name organizations, and we have not found an independent report of which teacher groups endorsed him, so none are listed here.
The dispute over the numbers
Whether schools had been cut depended on what was counted. Brownback's side said total education spending had gone up during his term. Davis's side focused on classroom funding, which it said had suffered the largest single cut in state history. Brownback's campaign also noted that Davis had voted for the 2009 and 2010 budgets, which cut school aid.
How it turned out
Davis lost the governor's race on November 4, 2014. Education stayed on his agenda: in 2018 his congressional campaign said leaders have "a moral obligation" to provide a world-class public education. See education.
