October 22, 2013: Davis names Jill Docking as running mate

Five weeks after entering the governor's race, Davis named Wichita businesswoman Jill Docking as his running mate. This address held the campaign's announcement. Here is what was reported.

What was announced

On October 22, 2013, Davis announced that Jill Docking would be his candidate for lieutenant governor. He made the announcement during a school bus tour with stops in Prairie Village, Topeka, Salina and Wichita, staged to put public education at the front of the campaign. A Lawrence Journal-World photo placed the Topeka stop outside Highland Park High School.

Who Jill Docking is

Docking, then 57, was a Wichita businesswoman and financial adviser and a former chair of the Kansas Board of Regents, which governs the state universities. She had written a politics blog critical of Gov. Sam Brownback's education budget. Her husband, Tom Docking, was lieutenant governor from 1983 to 1987; his father and grandfather were both governors of Kansas. In 1996 Jill Docking ran for the U.S. Senate and lost to Brownback, 53.9 percent to 43.3 percent.

How it was received

Davis called her "an expert in making wise investments for the future." Docking described Davis as a moderate leader "willing to sit down and reason with anyone." Kansas Republican Party Chairman Kelly Arnold answered that "no Docking has won a Kansas election in over 30 years."

How it turned out

The Davis-Docking ticket was unopposed in the August 2014 Democratic primary and lost the November 4 general election to Brownback and Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, 46.1 percent to 49.8 percent. See the elections page.
