What was reported
At a Topeka news conference on Friday, August 24, 2018, statewide labor unions representing police officers and firefighters endorsed Davis, the Lawrence Journal-World reported. The campaign site's archived addresses also link to Topeka Capital-Journal coverage headlined as Davis winning police and firefighter endorsements. We have not seen the release's list of endorsers and so do not name individuals here.
Much of the coverage that day was about something else. Davis declined to discuss impeachment after Michael Cohen's guilty plea. Watkins had claimed Davis would vote to impeach President Trump, and Davis said, "We need to let Bob Mueller do his job." He also compared the 2017 federal tax cuts to Brownback's Kansas cuts.
The 2014 precedent
Davis had drawn similar support in his race for governor. In August 2014 the Kansas Fraternal Order of Police and the Kansas State Firefighters PAC endorsed him, citing his "strong record on public safety issues," and in October the Kansas Highway Patrol's PAC followed. Brownback's campaign said at the time it was "unsurprising that they would side with the Democratic candidate."
How it turned out
Endorsements did not decide the race. Watkins, who led on border security and lower taxes in his messaging, won by 2,239 votes.
