What Davis said in 2018
His campaign site, as quoted by Ballotpedia, called for "stronger border security, improved vetting procedures, and more resources for law enforcement," together with a bipartisan overhaul that included the Dream Act for people brought to the country as children. Ballotpedia's summary adds that he opposed separating families at the border and opposed abolishing ICE. The campaign site's archived addresses also show a June 2018 release calling on Washington to end family separation at the border; its text is not reproduced here.
At the October 3, 2018 forum in Independence, organized by county Farm Bureau associations and chambers of commerce, Davis supported a path to citizenship for immigrants who are working, paying taxes and learning English. He did not directly address the border wall.
What Watkins said
At the same forum Watkins called for a border wall and a crackdown on illegal immigration, saying he wanted "to keep our culture," and backed ending sanctuary cities and chain migration. His campaign said voters wanted tighter border security.
The Kansas record
In 2011 Davis voted for the Kansas law requiring photo ID to vote and documentary proof of citizenship to register. He later said he had questioned the citizenship requirement while supporting photo ID, and in 2015 he represented two plaintiffs challenging the registration rules in federal court. The Kansas Republican Party chairman said he should withdraw because he had voted for the law; Davis refused.
